Questions & Answers

What you want to know.

Twenty-six direct answers about private medical house calls in Berlin — costs, process, insurance, medical scope, background. Grouped into five themed blocks.

01

Costs & billing

What does a doctor house call in Berlin cost?

A private physician house call in Berlin is billed under the German Medical Fee Schedule (GOÄ). The amount depends on the services actually rendered, the time of day and weekday, the travel distance and any statutory supplements for night, weekend and holiday visits. Privately insured patients are usually reimbursed, subject to their individual policy. We are happy to give an indicative estimate by phone.

How is the GOÄ price calculated?

A GOÄ invoice typically includes the house-call fee (item 50, item 51 for additional patients at the same address), consultation (item 1), symptom-related examination (item 5), services such as ECG, blood draw, IV or extended report (item 75), travel surcharge by distance band, and statutory supplements by time of day. The physician explains every line before you sign. Details in the GOÄ guide.

Are there surcharges for night, weekend or holiday hours?

Yes — the GOÄ defines fixed supplements: letter E (urgent visit), D (weekend/holiday examination), H (weekend/holiday house call), F (evening 8–10 p.m. and early morning 6–8 a.m.), C (night 10 p.m.–6 a.m. examination), G (night 10 p.m.–6 a.m. house call), K (child under four). These supplements are not multipliable and are itemised transparently on the invoice.

How is the travel surcharge (Wegegeld) calculated?

Travel surcharge per § 8 GOÄ depends on the simple one-way distance between practice and patient. The band: up to 2 km, up to 5 km, up to 10 km and up to 25 km — each with a daytime rate and a higher night rate (8 p.m. to 8 a.m.). Central districts such as Mitte, Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf, Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg, Pankow or Tempelhof-Schöneberg fall into the lowest band; outlying Spandau or Reinickendorf into a higher one.

How can I pay?

Privately insured patients and Beihilfe holders receive a GOÄ invoice to submit to their insurer — 14-day payment terms by bank transfer. Self-payers and international guests may settle on site by card (Visa, Mastercard, Girocard, Apple Pay, Google Pay) or on invoice.

Can I cancel a house call?

Yes. Cancellations are free of charge until the physician has set out. Once travel has begun, the travel surcharge per § 8 GOÄ applies to the distance covered.

02

Process & booking

How do I book a house call?

By phone or WhatsApp at +49 30 550 77 870 or via the booking form on akuttherapie-online.de. A real staff member answers — no phone tree, no anonymous call centre. We clarify symptoms, address and insurance status within minutes. See the process page.

How quickly does the doctor arrive?

The typical arrival time in Berlin is 60 to 90 minutes from confirmed booking. Inner-city traffic can extend this during the day; evenings and nights are often faster. Central Mitte and Charlottenburg are typically shorter, outlying Spandau, Marzahn-Hellersdorf or Reinickendorf a little longer. The confirmation time quoted at booking is what we commit to.

What should I have ready?

Insurance card or proof of coverage, current medication list, prior reports if available, ID. No appointment, no waiting.

When are you reachable?

Phone and WhatsApp are staffed daily from 6 a.m. to midnight — including weekends and public holidays, 365 days a year. A real person answers, no phone tree.

Which Berlin districts do you cover?
Do you make hotel calls?

Yes. Hotel guests can book RAB directly. A specialist comes discreetly to the room — promptly, with consultation in German and English. International insurance cards are accepted; the GOÄ invoice is submittable internationally. For hotels.

03

Insurance

Does private health insurance cover it?

Privately insured patients are usually reimbursed — the amount and deductible depend on your individual policy. Beihilfe holders (German civil servants) receive their statutory quota of 50–80% depending on employer and life stage; the remainder is covered by supplementary insurance.

Can I book with statutory insurance?

RAB Berlin is a private medical on-call service. For statutory-insured patients, the German statutory on-call service is reached via 116117. Self-payer use is possible in individual cases; statutory insurers generally do not reimburse. The GOÄ invoice may be deductible as an extraordinary burden under § 33 German Income Tax Act (case-by-case assessment).

Are international insurance plans accepted?

Yes. On request the invoice is issued in English with international standard codes — for submission to travel insurance, international health insurance or credit-card cover. Reimbursement is handled by your carrier; you can settle on site by card.

What is Beihilfe?

Beihilfe is German public healthcare support for civil servants, judges, soldiers and their families. The aid office typically covers 50–80% of costs, depending on employer and life stage. Supplementary private insurance covers the remainder. GOÄ invoices from RAB Berlin qualify for reimbursement. See glossary.

How do I submit the invoice to my insurer?

You receive the GOÄ invoice as a PDF by e-mail (postal copy on request). Submit the PDF online or via your insurer's app — most private insurers reimburse within two to four weeks straight to your bank account. Beihilfe holders additionally submit to their aid office.

04

Medical services

What can the doctor do on site?

The specialist brings a mobile diagnostic kit: blood draw with accredited lab, 12-lead ECG, point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS), urine test, rapid tests for influenza, Covid, strep and CRP. Infusions, injections and wound care are also possible on site. Imaging such as CT or MRI and surgery remain in hospital — for most acute, non-life-threatening conditions, mobile diagnostics are sufficient according to clinical guidelines.

Who comes — an assistant or a specialist?

Our specialist guarantee applies in every district: a board-certified physician arrives — general practice, internal medicine, paediatrics or related disciplines. Experienced physicians with long clinical practice.

Do you treat children?

Yes. We have paediatricians and paediatrically experienced GPs and internists on the team. The house call takes place in the familiar home environment — without waiting-room stress and without infection exposure to other patients. For families.

Are you suited for seniors and multimorbid patients?

Very much so. Susanne Reiche (medical director) is a specialist in internal medicine. We treat seniors with polypharmacy, dementia or care needs with particular care — including in nursing homes or hospices. Relatives can arrange a house call remotely.

Can I get a sick certificate?

Yes, where medically justified. After the physical examination the physician issues a German sick certificate (AU) for employer and insurer, bilingual on request. A purely remote sick note without prior examination is not permitted under medical professional law.

Will I get a prescription?

The specialist issues private prescriptions (blue form) or green recommendation slips. For ongoing medication, repeat prescriptions can follow by post or digitally.

Can I be treated in English?

Yes. Consultation, examination and documentation in English at no extra cost. Several specialists on our team consult fluently in English; further languages such as French, Polish, Russian, Italian or Spanish are often available. For international patients.

What is the difference to 116117?

116117 is the statutory on-call service for publicly insured patients — free nationwide, organised in Berlin by the Berlin Association of Statutory Health Insurance Physicians. RAB Berlin is a private medical on-call service with specialist guarantee for privately insured patients, Beihilfe holders, self-payers and international guests. The two services complement each other.

When should I call 112 instead of RAB?

In life-threatening emergencies — severe shortness of breath, chest pain radiating, unconsciousness, heavy bleeding, suspected stroke or heart attack, severe injuries — always call 112. RAB Berlin handles acute but non-life-threatening conditions and is not a substitute for emergency services.

What if no doctor is available?

If no specialist is available, we refer you to the statutory on-call service 116117 — or, for emergencies, to 112. You receive the alternative recommendation in the callback, free of charge.

Is there follow-up after the house call?

On request, Privatpraxis Reiche in Charlottenburg takes over follow-up — check-ups, lab follow-up, specialist treatment. The house call becomes a real bridge, not an abrupt cut-off. If inpatient care is needed, RAB coordinates the hospital admission.
